After I have heard about the benefits of physical exercises for the umpteenth time, I decided that I was going to start golfing. A dear brother, Ikile, who has been a member of a club gladly offered to take me through the rudimentary of the sport. About four to five years after that desire and the commitment of a willing instructor, I am yet to visit the golf course for the first time. The problem with me is that I have not applied myself to the discipline. We are often quick to explain our failure away because of what we think is not available. Getting those things is no guarantee that we will do better. No amount of equipment or facility can produce a change until we are ready to apply ourselves to the discipline on which change is built.
No amount of equipment or facility can produce a change until we are ready to apply ourselves to the discipline on which change is built…God’s Word is an indestructible weapon, but it only works for those who apply it.
Now, let us put a spiritual spin to the lesson. We know from Hebrews 4:12 that the word of God is quick and powerful; it is even sharper than any two-edged sword. But its’ power is only tied to our ability to respond to it. Until we begin to apply ourselves to the teachings of the word, we are not anywhere close to enjoying the power inherent in it. This is the thought beautifully conveyed in our passage today. The subject of our salvation is more than words. We must use God’s word in order to see any meaningful transformation. God’s Word is an indestructible weapon, but it only works for those who apply it.
