A number of scriptures teach the transitory nature of both physical and spiritual heritages. The story of Saul is a good one to illustrate this. When he made the first wrong move by sacrificing to the Lord without warrant, Samuel slammed him with a verdict. “And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you. For now the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.”” (I Samuel 13:13-14 NKJV). From here it is clear that God’s original plan was to establish a dynasty for Saul; but that passed to someone else.
“True and lasting safeguard only comes from the Spirit of God. So the Spirit does not only reveal what you have, He also helps you to keep them. “
The transitory nature of heritages is the reason we are charged to be watchful so that no one will take our crown. (Revelation 3:11). What all these point to is that whatever has been given to us must be guarded jealously. This brings us to another reason why the Holy Spirit is indispensable. No one can safeguard physical heritage, much less spiritual ones, by their strength and wisdom alone. True and lasting safeguard only comes from the Spirit of God. So the Spirit does not only reveal what you have, He also helps you to keep them. Understandably, we see in our text where Paul was encouraging his son in the faith to keep everything committed to his charge by the Holy Spirit. If you daily rely on the Spirit, you will not suffer any loss of your divine heritage.
