If you are a football freak, you would have known the endless debate over Ronaldo and Messi. Fans are forever taking bets to determine who is the greatest of the two. Though these men have made both name and fortune for themselves, and though there is no reward whatsoever for those who worry about them, the war of words never abates. Recently, an online magazine took things to a whole new level. It put up a survey question drawn hypothetically. It posited that in a burning house where you have Ronaldo, Messi and $100 million, and you have time to pick only two things, what would people take? Majority of the respondents chose $100 million, forgetting that they have the opportunity to take up to two of what was listed. Following closely to this group were those who chose the players. You would consider this group humane until you hear their reason. They believe that by rescuing the men, they would give them more money than the $100 million.
Though this was not a scientific finding, it nevertheless buttresses what we learned yesterday. A vast majority of people are ruled by money. This is why people throw away decorum both in the way they search for and spend money. Altruism is lost to many in their quest for money. Altruism is defined as charitable acts for the welfare of others all in the name of humanity. Those who opted to save people from dangers because of the money they would make failed the test of altruism. Jesus touched on having the right motive in all that we do. For example, He taught that when you give alms, you should not sound a trumpet about it. He also taught that when you throw a party, don’t invite those who are in positions to invite you back. Such practices have no reward from God. Doing things for the sake of God and eternity is where you get lasting reward.
