You must have heard the popular saying that if life gives you a lemon, make lemonade out of it. Samson would rather say that if life brings you trial, make a riddle out of it. Samson’s riddle was born out of a personal experience. On the way to his in-law’s place, a young lion accosted him. He tore the beast to pieces with bare hands. The Bible did not specifically say this, but from common sense and later from his riddle it is safe to conclude that he made some barbecue out of the slain lion. Some days later he turned to see the carcass of the lion only to find a swarm of bees and honey in it. He took some of the honey and the Bible records that “he went along, eating” (Judges 14:9). Of course, he gave some to his parents. The lion that could have devoured him ended up supplying full lunch and a dessert after.
When we are faced with threatening situations the natural response is to panic. But if we see beyond the momentary adversity we may soon discover that what is threatening us holds tremendous potential for advancement. From our threats could emerge treats and thrills to satisfy us. What Samson had going for him was the Spirit of God. When the lion charged at him, the Spirit rose within him and the lion eventually became history. When the Spirit rises within you, your strength is renewed and exploits follow.
