God demonstrated the power of unity in several places, beginning with the creation of man. After bringing His creative prowess to bear for five days, it was time to create mankind. The language employed shows unity. “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”” (Genesis 1:26 NKJV). The creation of man was a united venture for the triune God.
Our text underscores the fact that even for harmful ventures, unity is powerful. The survivors of Noah’s flood had multiplied again, but so had their rebellion. Whereas God wanted humans to replenish the earth, they decided they would rather stay in one place. The Tower of Babel was going to become the symbol of their rebellion against God’s mandate. God observed that they spoke one language, and had the same rebellious objective. He knew that with those in place, they would succeed. The way to stop them in their track was to confuse their language and that derailed the project. When evil people stand united, they release tremendous power that can be very destructive. Imagine what could happen when righteous people have one language and objective! Much more good can be done for the cause of the gospel and humanity. That was the reason Jesus never allowed any form of dissension among His disciples. The church of Christ still has what it takes to turn the world right side up; but unity is a prerequisite.
