In both Hebrew and Greek, the word “salvation” has a wide range of meanings. Its synonyms include deliverance, victory, prosperity, health, help, and welfare. Freedom from the power of sin and its consequences is an integral part of salvation, but it does not cover all there is to the subject. An interesting point is that salvation is inseparably connected to calling on the name of the Lord. Proverbs 18:10 says, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.” (NKJV). On the day of Pentecost, Apostle Peter said, “And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved.’” (Acts 2:21 NKJV). He quoted from the prophecy of Joel. People did call on the name of the Lord that day, and over 3,000 got saved.
As things seem to be spinning out of control globally, the time has come for people to return to calling on the name of the Lord for His salvation.
Our text indicates that after the birth of Enosh, men began to call on the name of the Lord. It is safe to say that they began to enjoy the saving grace of God, since that was (and still is) dependent on calling on the name of the Lord. Before this time, there had been a worsening in the moral condition of people. Suddenly, they seemed to realize that there was no way to fare well on the earth without giving heed to the Lord of the earth. That was the smartest thing to do. It would be presumptuous, if not foolhardy, to think that we can make it through the earth without soliciting God’s help. The Bible admonishes us to acknowledge God in all our ways; and that is the only time He would direct our paths. As things seem to be spinning out of control globally, the time has come for people to return to calling on the name of the Lord for His salvation.
