There are two aspects of sensitivity. Firstly, there is the physical side of sensitivity. This
obtains mainly in interpersonal relationships which we considered yesterday. Those
who operate with this form of sensitivity have progressed beyond the selfish tendency
that characterizes most people. They speak and act with sensibility, avoiding brushing
other people’s images and emotions. No doubt, this category of people is more fun to
be with and can hold meaningful relationships. The other side of sensitivity is the
spiritual angle. This speaks of being attuned to the Lord and His promptings. Spiritual
sensitivity helps you to know which way the Lord is leading. It also helps to locate
negative signals about future events.
“Through spiritual sensitivity, we can avoid dangers and connect with opportunities that will enhance our lives and purposes.”
Our text shows Paul’s apprehension as they sailed to Rome. He informed the ship
owner and the captain of what he sensed. He actually used the word “perceive”. His
spiritual antenna was up; and he was able to sense what 275 others on the ship had no
inkling of. He knew that the voyage would be ill-fated. Note that he was not a
professional and had no navigational aids to arrive at such conclusion. He just picked it
in the spirit. They rebuffed him, only to suffer a great loss of the ship and wares. It was
by the Lord’s mercy that their lives were spared. Through spiritual sensitivity, we can
avoid dangers and connect with opportunities that will enhance our lives and purposes.
