Our society is disintegrating at an alarming rate. Several factors are contributing to this. There is increasing polarization globally, a result of people holding strongly to divergent views. We have economic inequality, increasing the gap between the rich and the poor. In addition to these are political instability and technological disruptions. Rapid technological advancements with all their positives bring uneasiness to society.
“To reclaim society, we must first reclaim godly values.”
However, the most terrifying of all is the erosion of long held values. For example, someone wrote on Quora, “I am 23 and I have zero respect for old people. I think they are a waste of space. I have no respect for anyone over 40. What should I do?’’ This individual’s parents will probably be in their late 40s or early 50s. Automatically, the parents are among the people considered as nuisance or waste of space. Here is another sad story. A young lady was casually asked if she could slap her mother for two million naira (N2,000,000.00). She said she could do it even for less! In her estimation, doing that was far more noble than using her for ‘juju’ to make money. These examples demonstrate the breakdown of values. God’s word puts some people in a special category – widows, orphans, strangers, the elderly and the poor. Any society that disdains these groups of people is headed for disaster. To reclaim society, we must first reclaim godly values.
