If you have ever approached any of our commercial banks for facility to fund any project, you will be familiar with the term “equity”. Hardly will a bank lend you money for your project without your equity contribution. Recently, I learnt that there is spiritual equity too. I learned that from the same podcast of Archbishop Kirby Clement that I referenced yesterday. Remember what he said that complaining compromises creativity. In the light of equity, he offers that faith and obedience to God gives spiritual equity. Every stewardship that you practice also builds up your spiritual equity.
I believe it was this spiritual equity that Paul was referring to when he wrote to the Philippians. He had earlier commended them as the only church in Asia who communicated with him concerning giving and receiving. As can be seen from our text, Paul was not seeking a gift from them to swell his personal purse; but he considered whatever they do for him and the gospel as spiritual equity that is lodged in their heavenly accounts. We all have accounts in heaven. Jesus enjoined His audience to lay up treasure in heaven where thieves cannot break in to steal nor moth corrupt. Such spiritual equity will be the basis of our reward when we stand before God on the last day. Before then, it is possible to draw from our equity; and this comes in form of favour, counsel, and supernatural ideas that can positively alter the cause of life.
