For many years, I made an annual trip to Cameroun to be part of the conference at Faith Bible Church, Doula. While returning one particular year, the young man at the check-in counter informed me that I had excess luggage. I asked him to waive that on concessionary ground, after all I possessed a business class ticket. “That is not in my power to decide”, the young man replied; “only an agent could do that”, he added. A tall young man overheard our conversation and came to intervene. He instructed the man to let my luggage pass without paying any fee.
Another way that humility manifests is when we know the bounds of our authorities…Spiritual things are full of protocols. Breaking those protocols may be running at some risk.
Humility manifests in different ways. We touched on one yesterday, that is, restraining from jostling for the highest seat. Another way that humility manifests is when we know the bounds of our authorities. Only God’s authority is boundless; and even at that, He has put Himself under the rule of His word. So He will never act arbitrarily. Our text stressed the decorum of the Archangel Michael while contending with the devil over Moses’ body. He did not revile Satan, the accuser of the brethren but simply said, “The Lord rebuke you!” I don’t have the statistics, but I may not be way off to say that some believers are in trouble for their indiscretion in reviling the devil routinely. Spiritual things are full of protocols. Breaking those protocols may be running at some risk. If an archangel could not run his mouth unduly against the devil, we will be presumptuous to think we have such liberty.
