John, the forerunner of Jesus, was the first to herald the Holy Spirit in the New Testament setting. He spoke of Jesus as the Baptizer who would baptize the people with the Holy Spirit and fire. Jesus spoke elaborately about the Holy Spirit. One such instance is captured: “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” John 7:38-39 NKJV. After Jesus rose from the dead, He commissioned the disciples to go and make disciples of all nations, but not until they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Ten days later, they were filled with the Holy Spirit. Our text today captures that glorious experience.
…the Holy Spirit animates every aspect of our lives, giving us divine energy to operate. It is the very life of God at work in us!
The significance of the coming of the Holy Spirit is to remind us that believers have the breath of God. It is reminiscent of what God did in the beginning, breathing into the nostrils of the moulded man. When that happened, the man got animated. In the same way, the Holy Spirit animates every aspect of our lives, giving us divine energy to operate. It is the very life of God at work in us! The 50th day after Easter is usually celebrated as Pentecost Sunday. While this is commendable, believers should not limit their experience in the Holy Spirit to once a year. Every day ought to be Pentecost Day!
