The entire Bible contains precepts of wisdom. However, more than any other book of the Holy Writ, the book of Proverbs spoke almost entirely about wisdom. Though the book is tucked in the segment called Old Testament, the contents cut across ages and are timeless. Wisdom is never divided by time; wisdom remains wisdom. The book of Proverbs presents foundational value of wisdom, so much so that even God had to have wisdom before He set out with His works. By wisdom we can conduct our homes as well as businesses. Wisdom is considered superior to weapons of war. The passage before us gives a clue on how to contact wisdom. Two things can be seen here as prerequisites for wisdom. The first is effort. The verse began with an admonition to “go”. No one can truly operate in wisdom without making some efforts. For example, we understand that knowing scriptures can make one wise unto salvation (2 Timothy 3:15). You cannot know scriptures without giving attention to it.
God is the ultimate dispenser of wisdom; and He reserves the right to choose which method He will employ to teach us. Ours is to submit with all humility.
Apart from making effort, one needs ample doses of humility to get wisdom. God asked us to go and learn; and He made the ant our course instructor! That will require some humbling to do. The ant is such a small creature that it almost sounds ridiculous that there is anything to learn from it. God is saying in effect that wisdom doesn’t always come in big wraps! The smallness of the ant makes it incumbent on an inquirer to stoop down before anything can be learned. That is a token of humility. The Pharisees lost out on the wisdom of Jesus because they considered Him beneath them. God is the ultimate dispenser of wisdom; and He reserves the right to choose which method He will employ to teach us. Ours is to submit with all humility.
