It is possible to distinguish between different types of wisdom. When James talked on the subject, he recommended the wisdom that comes from above which is pure and peaceable. He contrasted this with the earthly wisdom which is sensual and devilish. Also, whenever the Bible speaks of wisdom it is not always in the context of head knowledge or being an “A” student academically. Most descriptions of wisdom which we find in the book of Proverbs have to do with applications. That is why we examined the culture of hard work exemplified by ants as wisdom. What we might add to this is that ants not only work hard, but that they do so at the appropriate time. God’s word says they gather their food in summer in anticipation of winter days. By this they demonstrate foresight.
Doing the right thing at the right time is a manifestation of wisdom…God’s principle makes provision for retirement.
Doing the right thing at the right time is a manifestation of wisdom. The text before us says it makes perfect sense for someone to get accustomed to accepting responsibility in the early days with all the strength and zest of a youth. This is because no one can stop what we might call the “winter years” from coming. Old age will set in when work becomes impossible or extraordinarily difficult. If we operate with the wisdom of the ants we will have something to fall back on when such a time comes. Jesus had in mind this principle of early engagement as a guiding philosophy of His earthly ministry; and that was why He said, “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work” (John 9:4). We must follow this example of the Master and teach others to do so as well. God’s principle makes provision for retirement.
