The word of God is our life’s compass. It is a comprehensive guide for every aspect of life and can lead us to our inheritance. Having a right disposition to the Bible releases God’s blessings. “Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.” Revelation 1:3 NKJV. Three things are listed here that qualify one for blessing. Firstly, there is blessing reserved for those who read the word of God. Secondly, hearing the word of God has its own blessing. Finally, keeping or doing the word has blessing. This last bit has a bearing on our text. Keeping the word is one way we demonstrate that we truly fear the Lord.

The fear of the Lord is demonstrated by departing from iniquity. This is clearly stated in Proverbs 16:6 – “By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.” I love saying that those who fear the Lord need no policing, the fear in their hearts is what regulates them both publicly and privately. Our fear of the Lord should stem out of love for Him; and it is the same love that should motivate us to depart from things that are not pleasant before the Lord.
