When people ask me questions or make demands for which I have no ready answer, I would normally tell them to give me time to sleep over it. On several occasions, I had woken up the following morning after the enquiry with clear paths to follow or what must be done. What happens is that I take advantage of the heart’s instruction that comes mostly through the stillness of the night. Jeremiah 17:9 is often misinterpreted. It says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” Does this describe believers or unbelievers? It certainly must be the state of the heart that is yet to encounter God. At the point of meeting God, the heart of stone (the wicked heart) is supernaturally removed and replaced with a heart of flesh (which is tender, kind, and sensitive to both God and man).
“A heart fully yielded to God becomes a priced possession to the owner thereof… Once the heart is fully possessed by God, it whispers divine counsel every turn of the way.”
A heart fully yielded to God becomes a priced possession to the owner thereof. Rather than churning out evil and wickedness, it becomes a sort of Global Positioning System (GPS) showing where to go and what to do. This is the thrust of our text today. The Psalmist exulted in God for His wonderful counsel. The primary way the counsel came was by instruction of the heart, particularly in the night season. Once the heart is fully possessed by God, it whispers divine counsel every turn of the way. Our text is wonderfully rendered in The Passion Translation (TPT): “The way you counsel and correct me makes me praise you more, for your whispers in the night give me wisdom, showing me what to do next.” When in doubt of what to do next, listen to what God will drop in your heart in the night.
