In the previous meditations, we already learned of two things that believers should do at all times. Blessing God is one, trusting Him is another. Today, we put our emphasis on righteousness as the next in line. Take another look at our text, God’s special blessing is reserved for those who practice righteousness at all times. There are people who shiver when they hear words like righteousness or holiness. This may be due to a legalistic presentation of the subject. Viewed in a balanced scriptural way, no subject should be as inviting as that of righteousness. Embracing righteousness is the principal way we become partakers of God’s divine nature. What then can compare to sharing with divinity!

Three things will be stressed for a better appreciation of this. The practice of righteousness is a proof that you are born of God. “If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.” (I John 2:29 NKJV). To be born again is to be made a child of God. However, many people find the term “born again” rather technical. If you want to know who truly is of God, look out for the practice of righteousness. Those who are born of God have been delivered from sinful nature and can no longer make a practice of sin. Besides, righteousness enhances a person’s confidence. Proverbs 28:1 puts it clearly: “The wicked flee when no one pursues, But the righteous are bold as a lion.” (Proverbs 28:1 NKJV). Finally, righteousness greases one’s prayer life. According to James, it is the effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man that avails much.
