The bottom line of all spiritual adventure is divine endorsement. Nothing is more precious than to hear that one has pleased God. It was the highest testimonial that Jesus received. “And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”” (Matthew 3:17 NKJV). The writer of Hebrews made divine endorsement an issue of prayer. “Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.” (Hebrews 13:20-21 NKJV). This should be at the core of all our prayers as well.

In the text before us, Asa received divine endorsement. He did what was right in the eye of the Lord. This must have been on the heel of three things. Firstly, what he proscribed. It is on record that he banished from the land those who practiced Sodomy. “And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.” (1 Kings 15:12 KJV). We have it on good authority here that homosexuality has been long practiced but has never been approved by God. It was wrong then, it is still wrong now. In addition to proscribing sodomy, he also got rid of idols made by his father. Secondly, what he preserved. While he got rid of the idols of his father, he preserved the things dedicated to God. Finally, there were those things which he personally procured or produced for purposes of dedication. Apart from using these parameters for sourcing divine endorsement, they also constitute what we need to make progress in life. From time to time, we must pause to ask what to stop doing, what to preserve, and what to produce.
