In our previous meditation, we learned of a young man who walked in the spirit of Adam, blaming God for his predicament. There are similar characters in the Bible who exhibited the same trait, and we fix our gaze on Martha today. When her brother Lazarus was sick, she and her sister Mary sent for Jesus. In keeping with divine timing Jesus delayed His coming. (How important to remind ourselves always that if God seems to delay, there is a reason!). By the time Jesus showed up Lazarus had been dead four days. That was when Martha uttered the words in our text. What she meant in essence was that Jesus’ delay was the reason their brother died. Whenever we think that God is behind our problems, we are in error!
“Perhaps we can learn something from Jesus and show more understanding. Those who accuse you wrongly may be dealing with some undisclosed frustrations. “
Jesus did not show any displeasure to the blame Martha was heaping on Him. Why would He do that; He already knew that she was grieving? Counter blame or accusation of indecorous behaviour could not have helped Martha in any way. What Jesus did was to demonstrate love and tolerance born out of understanding. Many of us will go up in arms if accused wrongly. Perhaps we can learn something from Jesus and show more understanding. Those who accuse you wrongly may be dealing with some undisclosed frustrations. If you can, correct the wrong impression to alter their judgment; but if you are not making sense to them, pray and leave the matter in the hands of God.
