An English proverb that we grew up with says, “Make hay while the sun shines”. It simply means to make the most of a favourable situation while it lasts. In the final analysis, the difference between two persons may be traceable to how they handle their favourable moments. This truth is applicable in all realms – physical, spiritual, economic. At our favourable moments we sense a rush of energy, a chance meeting with someone with vital information, or an open door for higher service.
“Always remember that if you waste an opportunity, you may never get it back or may have to wait for a long time for a second chance.”
From our passage we see that a favourable moment came to Felix to reconcile with God. As Paul preached on the subject of righteousness, temperance, and the Judgment of God, Felix’s heart was literally burning. He came under heavy conviction of the Holy Spirit. That should have been the turning point in his life, a time to commit to the saving grace of God. However, he failed to seize the moment, promising to call for Paul at a more convenient season. Few things are achievable in life with convenience, not the least salvation of our soul and an intimate walk with God. A dictionary defines the word convenience as that which is close by or does not require much effort. Those who always wait for convenient season hardly do much for God or themselves. We never read that the convenient season came for Felix. This reminds us of the scripture that those who wait for perfect conditions will never get anything done. Learn to work with the appointed season of God, not the season you find convenient. In addition, learn to seize every opportunity that comes your way to do service for God or the cause of humanity. Always remember that if you waste an opportunity, you may never get it back or may have to wait for a long time for a second chance.
