Man’s dominion was contingent on his formation in the image and likeness of God. To begin with, what do we mean by saying that man was made in the image and likeness of God? The two words are synonymous and they do not refer to physical essence, since we know that God is Spirit. So the terms refer to man’s spiritual resemblance to God. Man stands out in comparison to other beasts made by God. This is easily seen in his ability to reason, talk and exercise moral discernment, all of which are alien to other animals. In addition, man has the capacity for worship. As long as Adam and Eve retained these divine essences, they had absolute dominion over all other works of creation. They were only driven out when they disobeyed God.
“It is the man made in the image and likeness of God that exercised dominion. Losing that image and likeness meant losing some of their dominion.”
Here is the point again: it is the man made in the image and likeness of God that exercised dominion. Losing that image and likeness meant losing some of their dominion. So believers who are desirous of walking in dominion must first be zealous of becoming like Him. It is this same truth that John stressed – “He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.” I John 2:6 NKJV. The more we become like the Master, the easier it becomes to walk in greater dominion. Outside of this, any attempt to exercise dominion will be presumptuous and can backfire. The seven sons of Sceva would attest to this.
