PATH TO WISDOM
"We gain wisdom by observation." PATH TO WISDOM, APR 30, 2023

Proverbs and other portions of the Bible pay glowing tributes to wisdom. It is ranked
above money and other desirable things. Its proceeds include peace, health, and long
life. God enjoins us to acquire wisdom, and told us how to get it. The easiest way to
acquire wisdom is by listening. Even native wisdom comes from hearing. In those days,
elders instilled wisdom in children by telling them stories, oftentimes, after dinner. The
tortoise made the most interesting storylines. Life-applicable lessons came from those
stories. The westernization of every aspect of our cultural life is a disgrace and a
disservice to our heritage. It is true that there were aspects of the culture that were
barbaric, even demonic. However, there were brilliant ones, like storytelling, that should
have been preserved. Back to divine wisdom, listening to God’s wisdom will put us on
the path to acquiring it. “A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of
understanding will attain wise counsel” (Proverbs‬

“We gain wisdom by observation.”

From our text, we see another way to acquire wisdom. Here, God is drawing our
attention to the life of Abraham. There are several cases where God drew our attention
to certain characters. Jesus remarked, “Remember Lot’s wife”. That was to warn the
people to avoid her mistake. Being called to look at Abraham is an invitation to learn
what connected him to God’s blessing. We gain wisdom by observation.

THE NAME OF THE LORD
"If we reduce the things of God to mere comedy, we forfeit their inherent power." -Simeon Afolabi, B&W, THE NAME OF THE LORD, APR 29, 2023

The psalmist described the name of the Lord as a strong tower, one which the righteous
can run into and be safe. From our text, we learn of a number of things that are made
possible through the use of the Lord’s name. Subduing demons, protection from harm,
healing and restoration are all benefits that we can derive from using the name of the
Lord. However, there is a caveat: the name of the Lord must be sanctified. The third
commandment states: “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the
Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.” (Exodus‬

“If we reduce the things of God to mere comedy, we forfeit their inherent power.”

How do people take the name of the Lord in vain? Breaking promises and covenant is
tantamount to taking the name of the Lord in vain. A child of God must be known as a
promise keeper. His word must be his bond. Generally, any lifestyle of sin is taking the
name of the Lord in vain. Remember David’s liaison with Bathsheba. Nathan averred
that David’s sinful action gave occasion to the enemies of God to speak reproachfully.
Finally, every form of blasphemy is taking the name of the Lord in vain. Blasphemy is
defined as insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God. There is
something I found worrisome. I have come across skit makers using the name of the
Lord for absurd comedy. They do that to entertain people and gather likes on their
various social media handles. They forget that no one can mock God. If we reduce the
things of God to mere comedy, we forfeit their inherent power.
